Pay Yourself First
I just read a blog by Steve Pavlina, http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2007/07/making-time-for-the-important/ , what got my attention was the Pay Yourself First section. I have spent the past 10 years not paying myself first so that is why this principle catches my interest.
Steve mentions that this idea is often pertaining to money but it can also be used with time. It can probably be used with so many other important things like love, peace and caring, too. So often we give away love and peace and caring to others before we give any to ourselves but that is another blog. Steve is focusing on time and that is where I am focusing this blog too.
Over the past 10 years I have owned my own business. I write my own paychecks, or I don’t, and there have been more times that I don’t write myself a paycheck than I have so, that is the money issue. Pay yourself first. I am now on a quest to collect my back pay. It is due to me and I know the universe is fair and balanced so my back pay is coming to me. In the mean time I am collecting my pay first now.
Time. Steve’s post says make time for yourself. If you don’t you will burn out and become resentful. In the long run you will be better off taking the time for yourself. Could there be drawbacks? Steve reminds us drawbacks could be late fees or getting yelled but virtually all will be forgiven and in the end you keep your sanity and enjoy life a bit more.
I don’t know about you but in the past I have held on to everytime someone has been disappointed in me and yelled at me. When I was around that person after I failed their expectations I felt like a failure in their eyes. Even a simple late fee would make me feel like a failure. Realizing now that person or organization didn’t hold on to poor thoughts of me, they moved on.
I set myself up for failure by trying to be perfect for everyone else. I am now moving on and learning to live for me and my purpose. True happiness will come from me living for me first then everything else will fall into place.
Steve’s post is very enlightening, I hope you enjoy it too.
Best Wishes!
