The Joy of Self-Employment
I have been self-employed for the past 11 years. I own a direct sales, scented candle business, Heaven Scent Candle Co. That business has been my existence for those past 11 years and I love being self-employed! My husband and I work together everyday all day long and we love it! (We still love each other too, can you believe that? We don’t have any children either, our business is our family.) In fact, we get asked a lot, “Don’t you get sick of each other?”
We don’t! We met at work, at a publishing company, 18 years ago and we have enjoyed each others’ company ever since. In fact, for several years we worked separate jobs and we hated it. I know I am blessed to enjoy my husband’s company (and vice versa) and that we get to work together everyday. Life is good!
I love my candle business. I have experienced so many great things with it. We sell mostly through home parties. Home parties are a great way to sell candles. Customers can sample the candles scents and really relax and enjoy themselves. I have met so many great people and made face to face relationships that will last forever.

But enough of my little advertisement … I love my business. If I didn’t I wouldn’t be doing it, duh! It keeps me so busy! I do have to wear uncountable hats to keep my business going. I have learned so much and there is no limit to what I can do. When I worked in Corporate America (I have a Applied Science Degree in Design Engineering) I could only advance if I furthered my education. Nothing against higher education but I really didn’t enjoy what I was doing and furthering my education was not going to help. I also think that you can learn just as well by doing and that is what I have been doing for the past 11 years.
Happiness is one of the most important things in life. Life is good, and it can go by quickly. Self-employment is not for everyone. I know that I work harder for myself than I ever worked for someone else. I don’t get raises or overtime. I actually make less money but I am happy and that is most important to me.
